Solid Wood Flooring

Solid wood flooring can really make a difference to your home even if you're on a budget. As one of the worlds most versatile floor coverings not only do you get traditional beauty but also practical advantages such as lasting good looks, stain resistance, including wine and food, warm to the touch, easy to clean, hygienic and dust free, especially good for allergy sufferers. Solid wood is often seen as being the material of choice where the design calls for more character. The presence of gaps between boards and the ability to finish on site are often seen as essential for barn conversions or older listed properties, although solid prime boards can be ideal for contemporary environments. Solid wood is generally perceived as being more durable than an engineered product however the governing factor is the amount of hardwood that is above the tongue & groove. Nowdays, there is hardly any difference in the wear surface of solid versus engineered and the decision to choose solid is often emotional.

Pitch Pine

Pitch Pine Solid Wood Flooring

Pitch pine offers a great value floor, nice wide boards in good lengths and far cheaper than an oak floor in the same spec. It is also an excellent retainer of heat so keeps your home warm. Its strength and durability are similar to that of red oak and according to NWFA it is 29% more stable than oak. It takes screws and nails well and is also very easy to stain / finish.

A pitch pine floor improves with time, colors ranging from yellows to vibrant reds and coppers deepen and intensify with age. Chosen as the primary wood for restoring historic homes and national landmarks of America and Europe it defines any surrounding whether reclaiming the past with that antique look or remembering the present with the modern styles of today.

Jatoba

Jatoba Solid Wood Flooring

Known for its exceptional hardness, this exotic hardwood is a great choice in both residential and commercial installations.

Sometimes referred to as Brazilian or South American Cherry, it is a reddish brown wood, with an interlocking grain and some golden and darker brown streaks which give it an exotic expression. Originally light, it naturally darkens when exposed to sunlight and goes from tan or salmon to a deep reddish brown over several months.

Ipe

Ipe Solid Wood Flooring

Ipe is a truly amazing wood. It has a Janka rating of over 3600, making it one of the densest woods that are currently available on the hardwood flooring market. Ipe has a lot of very positive characteristics, but it also has its issues! It is so dense that with even a marginal finish applied to the surface, most spills will pool on the top rather than penetrate below. And it survives the abuse even from a 100 pound sheep dog with limited wear marks.

Ipe is really a cluster of many trees from the Bignoniaceae family (Tabebuia, spp) that share a common appearance and physical characteristics. They are all dense and rather straight grained. Some pieces look quite similar to teak. It is very resistant to decay, termite and dry insect attack, it is also VERY fire resistant as well.

Colour range varies from a medium straw with olive green overtones to a reddish brown with darker black streaks, samples can have a very large range of colours. Make sure that you understand this, and don’t buy, expecting colour uniformity. It is always best, if possible to visit a customer that has had this type of flooring in use for a number of years. You can then judge not only the appeal of the colouring but also the durability of the finish.

Hardwood Decking

Bangkirai Solid Wood Decking

Bangkirai Hardwood Decking, or Yellow Balau as it is also known, is one of nature's most resilient and beautiful hardwoods. It is ideal for outdoor projects.

Bangkirai Hardwood Decking can be sealed using a penetrating oil sealer to accentuate it’s natural reddish-brown colour and grain appearance; or if left alone in time it turns silver gray. It requires no real maintenance if left untreated other than a power wash every now and again to remove any algae or moss growth which can make it slippy if left.
