There is no distinction between sapwood and heartwood, the timber being whitish to pale brown.  The heartwood can however contain Brown Kern colouring the centre of the log brown to red colour

Working Properties

 

Works fairly easily.  Planes and moulds to a good clean surface, and takes glue and stain satisfactorily.


European Ash (Fraxinus excelsior)

Colour

Usually no distinction in colour between sapwood and heartwood, slightly brownish white after drying

Uses

Furniture and components.  Chair making, sports goods, ladder rungs, dowels, tool handles, shop fittings

Working Properties

Works and machines quite well and finishes to a reasonable smooth finish.  It glues, stains and polishes well.
